High blood pressure or hypertension is common in older cats It is usually found as a complication of other underlying medical conditions such as Kidney disease. In fact regular blood pressure checks are now recommended.
The things to look out for are:
• Low Blood Pressure
• Lethargy, weakness, confusion, excessive urination, fainting or collapse, increased thirst and also pale or white gums.
• High Blood Pressure
• Nosebleeds, behavioural changes, blindness, seizures, weakness and disorientation
If your cat is behaving strangely or out of character and shows any of the above symptoms, then you should see a Vet as soon as possible. If your cat is diagnosed with blood pressure (Hypertension) your cat will require an assessment to see what medication or tests are required. Measuring blood pressure doesn’t take long and is completely pain free and most cats tolerate it well.
