More frequently encountered in humans, obesity is also encountered in pets.
It’s a condition in which the body contains too much fat due to an excess of food, or lack of proper exercise or (much less commonly) a metabolic condition such as hypothyroidism. Many owners feel feeding their pet is a way to show their love for them, but truly an overweight pet is predisposed to die earlier, as they could have diabetes, osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions or even cancer.
Check their weight regularly, and make sure you are giving them the right amount and type of food for their lifestyle.
If your cat is overweight and on a diet, check their weight at least weekly; speedy weight loss acn trigger a condition called hepatic lipidosis. Try to awaken your cat’s hunter side with a puzzle feeder or toys that dispense food.
