Out & About… Royston Arts Festival

The end of September sees the return of Royston Arts Festival if you haven’t already been reminded by the programme delivered with The Listing. The Creative Royston committee is proud to unveil the full programme of over 30 events, which this year are themed around “Our Planet”.

This year we are very excited to welcome Alison Balsom and The Balsom Ensemble for a very special opening night concert: The Baroque Trumpet. Taking place on Thursday 19th September at St Mary’s Church In Ashwell, this event will raise funds for the restoration of Royston Parish Church.

Returning for its fourth year, Royston MusicFest ‘19 will take place on Sunday 22nd, bringing another day packed with live music. All shows are completely FREE, all afternoon, at eight venues around Royston and culminating in a gala concert at The Old Bull Inn at 7pm. Full details can be found in the MusicFest programme, and an up-to-the-minute schedule at www.roystonmusicfest.uk.

During the week Creative Royston will be celebrating the diversity of Our Planet during An Evening With Cookie MonStar (Wednesday 25th, The Old Bull Inn), when the acclaimed Drag Star, Cookie MonStar, will be supported burlesque artiste Coco Nobel. The following night (Thursday 26th) we will be escaping Our Planet altogether, with The Search For Earth’s Twin Planet, a talk by science writer and novelist Stuart Clark at Royston Library about the search for another habitable world.

On the afternoon of Saturday 28th September, Priory Memorial Gardens will be packed with activities from eco-crafts to yoga, at our popular Community Arts Event. There will also be music, dance, storytelling and much, much more. Entry is free, as are many of the activities – fun for all ages!

The festival culminates on Sunday evening, as usual, with our Finale Concert – this year at King James Academy Upper School hall, compered by local soprano Hannah Long and featuring (amongst others) Royston Town Band, Women Sing, pupils of Alice Hyland and ensembles from King James Academy.

There are also exhibitions galore, a full programme of varied events from Royston Fringe, concerts, talks, CADS’ production of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path.
